Clerk, County officials suspended over Sh9.5m deal

Kisii, Kenya - A county clerk and senior officials from Kisii County assembly have been suspended over a Sh9.5 million illegal medical cover.

County Assembly Clerk James Nyaoga and senior officers have been suspended over the illegal medical cover and alleged Sh147 million owed to creditors.

Members of the County Assembly on Thursday evening adopted a report by the Legal Committee and immediately called for the suspension of the officers.

The assembly also called on further investigations into the loss of the mega medical cover paid out to APA insurance company through an agent, Merve Commercial Insurance and Agencies early last year.

Also suspended are Director of Finance Joseph Amenya, head of Human Resource Francisca Boke, tendering committee chair Jane Kigo and Senior Accountant Moses Ratemo.  A motion to suspend the entire County Assembly Public Service Board will also be tabled in the next one week.

The Committee of Justice and Legal Affairs, Chaired by County Assembly member Koina Onyancha, made an inquiry into the Members of County Assembly medical insurance cover and came up with a raft of recommendations.

The Committee had recommended that disciplinary action be taken against the clerk, Directors of Finance and Human Resource and senior accountant in relation to the implementation of the insurance contract.

“This house resolves that disciplinary action be taken against the officers by the duly mandated legal body which is the Kisii County Assembly Service Board with a view to having them dismissed,” the committee recommended.

The MCAs warned they will not condone any form of corruption and promised to return all the allowances they had been paid illegally.
