Nyali business and residents association eyes county projects

Mombasa; Kenya: A residents’ association in Mombasa County has adopted proposals to mobilise resources to invest in some of the devolved unit’s projects.

Officials of the Nyali Business and Residents Association (Nibra) said yesterday it plans to partner with Mombasa County on various development matters, especially the rehabilitation of the road network in the area.

Nibra is a splinter group of the New Nyali Residents Association. “We want to partner with the county government on all matters pertaining to development and infrastructure within Nyali constituency,” said the association’s Chairperson, Ms Wangare Ndegwa.

Proper planning

Speaking during a meeting with Mombasa County Governor Hassan Ali Joho at Nyali International Hotel on Friday, Ms Ndegwa said they will lobby for proper planning of Nyali constituency.

Mr Joho said his administration was keen to partner with private firms to achieve its development agenda as the budgetary allocation by the national government was not sufficient.

He said that the county had developed a water transport system plan and called on the association and other private firms to partner with it in its implementation.

“When I said that Mombasa will require an annual allocation of Sh30 billion to enable it to develop our infrastructure to the level of other towns like Nairobi, I was told that the amount was so huge and we had to review it downwards. But we are now want to partner with the private sector to achieve our development agenda,” said Joho.

Other areas where the county is seeking partnership with the private sector include drainage and waste management.

Nibra’s Secretary General Millicent Odhiambo said the group provides a forum for residents to  air views on they issues they want addressed by the county government and other Government departments.

The county has also announced plans to build an alternative bridge linking north Coast to Mombasa Island.

Joho said the county will invest Sh2 billion in the construction of landing jetties for picking and dropping passengers and called on the private sector to partner with his administration in the project.

The county plans to licence water crafts with a capacity of at least 100 passengers to operate between the mainland and island.
