A Nakuru court has sentenced a woman who has been torturing her underage house help, to one year in prison and fined her Sh150,000.

Everlyine Juliette Atieno was charged with cruelty and economic exploitation after pleading guilty before Resident Magistrate Rita Amwayi.

“She was lazy and I wanted to ‘wake’ her to perform house duties ...,” she said during the mention of her case.

Atieno, 27, a resident of Mawanga Estate in Nakuru repeatedly used a hot knife to scald the hands and face of the 14-year-old house girl.

Ms Amwayi ruled that the woman be jailed for one year and another six months if she defaults the fine of Sh100,000 and Sh50,000 for the two respective counts.
