Moses Kuria warns Jubilee senators over recall

Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria

Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria wants Jubilee senators not to honour summons by the Senate speaker Ekwe Ethuro for a special sitting on Tuesday to debate the recently enacted security laws.

Mr Kuria said by accepting to attend the Tuesday sitting to discuss a motion relating to the recently enacted Security Laws Amendment Act, Jubilee senators will be betraying the same government they were elected to serve and protect.

Speaking at PCEA Kirangari church in Gatundu town Sunday, Mr Kuria said the senators had no authority whatsoever to discuss a law that had already been passed by the National Assembly.

He said the main legislative work of the Senate was to come up with laws on devolution adding security was not one of them and therefore urged them to keep off.

“You cannot be in Jubilee and act in ways that frustrate the ruling coalition's agenda. When it comes to security matters, you cannot be on the middle ground. You have to be on either side which is the government side,” said Kuria.

The senators have cried foul of the new law saying they were not involved in its passage. They maintain it was wrong to bypass them.

He said Jubilee senators who will defy his calls should brace for tough times ahead including being expelled from their parties forcing them go back to the ballot.

Senate Speaker Ekwe Ethuro recalled the House in a special gazetted Notice dated December 24, to discuss a motion relating to the recently enacted Security Laws Amendment Act.

“There will be a special sitting for the senate on Tuesday December 30, 2014 at 2.30 pm. The business will be a motion relating to enactment the Security Laws (Amendments) Act,” read a message sent to senators.

Mr Ethuro’s move came after Senate Minority leader Moses Wetang’ula wrote to the speaker requesting the recall the House so that the senate could take a common stand on the matter.
