125 Kenyans perished on roads in last three weeks

NAIROBI, KENYA: At least 125 people have died in road accidents in the last three weeks. This is a reduction from the 302 who died in the same period last year, traffic police said.

Traffic commandant Charlton Muriithi said most accidents were caused by private cars and not the Public Service Vehicles. The latest accidents, he said, happened along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway in Salgaa where four people died and in Kiganjo, Nyeri County, in which three people perished on Saturday and Friday respectively.

"We know there has been a marked improvement in terms of road discipline. We have seen a dramatic decline," Mr Muriithi said.

The traffic boss said plans to introduce punitive laws against pedestrians crossing roads at non-designated areas are on course.

He said they will be charged with attempted suicide. Previously, they were charged with obstructing motorists.

In Nairobi alone, 490 pedestrians have been killed in the past six months. A total of 780 pedestrians have been killed, while 333 passengers have died this year alone.
