UK ‘hasn’t issued travel advisory’

The UK has clarified that it has not issued a travel advisory to British citizens following the Westgate shopping mall terrorist attack.

“We do not have a new advisory about travel to Kenya. The only updates since the terrorist attacks have been factual ones,” said John Bradshaw of the British High Commission.

Bradshaw said they have made two changes in regard to the advice they had offered to their citizens, touching on their movement and security while in the country.

“Our travel advisories are constantly reviewed and take seriously any decision to change done, which must be careful,” he stated.

Bradshaw termed the earlier advice to their citizens as facts as represented on the ground. After the Westgate Shopping mall attack, the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advised its citizens against all but essential travel to areas within 60km of the Kenya-Somali border.

The areas include Kiwayu and coastal areas north of Pate Island, Garissa District, Eastleigh area of Nairobi and to low income areas of Nairobi, including all township or slum areas.

During the attack, Britain advised its citizens to avoid the cordoned area around the shopping centre.
