Four children killed in Nyandarua accident

Four children were on Monday killed in a road accident at Mawingu area along the Olkalou-Njambini road in Nyandarua County.

The four were killed after a speeding car knocked them down as they headed to school near Mawingu town.

Following the incident near St Peters Primary school, locals held a demonstration and barricaded the busy road with logs causing a major traffic snarl up.

According to a witness James Kuria, the accident occurred after a pickup heading to Engineer town from Kipiriri town hit a form one student from Greenhill Academy.

“The student who was riding a bicycle was rushing back home to pick something when the double-cabin vehicle which hit him and lost control,” he said.

The vehicle lost control and hit three other pupils walking by the roadside killing them on the spot.

Kuria said that the three minors from St Peters Primary school included a brother and a sister while the third boy was the only son of a single mother in Mawingu town.

Nyandarua deputy governor Waithaka Mwangi condoled the families of the children and called for erection of bumps on the busy road.

 “We are concerned over the high number of people we are losing on this road and we call for erection of bumps near town centers and school,” he said.

Nyandarua North OCPD Samson Munyao confirmed the accident saying that the driver was among those seriously injured.

“There was an accident in Mawingu early today and four school going children have been killed and four other passengers seriously injured,” he said.

 “The bodies have been taken to Naivasha district hospital mortuary and we are trying to clear the section of the road,” he said.
