Some decide to go for something similar to their normal day-to-day look so they still feel like themselves, but others use the opportunity to go all out and try something new.
One make-up artist who specialises in completely transforming brides for their special day has shared five before and after photos - and they really are unbelievable.
Arber Bytyqi does the wedding make-up for about 100 brides a year, and a lot of work goes into each unique look.
He told BoredPanda : "When I meet my client, the first question I ask is what kind of occasion are they getting their makeup done for.
"I also ask my clients if they have any specific requests. For example, if they want a natural or dramatic look.
"Makeup is like jewelry for the face. Play with colors and shapes. Don't be afraid to transform yourself. At the end of the day, you can just clean it."
People were completely amazed by the photos, and Arber's page has more than 262,000 followers.
