Sonko remarks about his 'mipango wa kando' causes mixed reactions online

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko speaking during an event made remarks that left netizens confused.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, the Governor made the remarks while clarifying his good relationships with the Kikuyus.

Sonko also said that the incoming Nairobi’s Deputy Governor is of the same tribe and all his nominated Members of County Assembly (MCAs).

“People said that Sonko does not love Kikuyus. I would like to say that I love Kikuyus. I have nominated more than 10 Kikuyu MCAs, my first wives are Kikuyus, my children are Kikuyus, my in-laws are Kikuyus, all my concubines are Kikuyus, let us speak the truth. The incoming female Deputy Governor is a Kikuyu, my County secretary is a Kikuyu…,” said Sonko.

The video has had a lot of netizens talking with most questioning his statement and others saying that he was simply making a political joke;

I still don't get how an informed person spent hours on voting line then ended up with Sonko as his/her choice, I just don't get it! ????

I long for that day Kenyans will be talking of Tribe KENYA & not Luo,Kikuyu,Luhya,Kamba or in other words Kuacha Ukabila. May GOD shower blessing to Kenya & Kenyans.— Ben Yahya (@BenYahy77768590) May 5, 2018

Nairobi County Government is an eyesore. It is a shame. How sad that I was born, schooled and live here. Shame on the governor who tells hawkers and street families they will not be removed by force. Take a walk around Nairobi Bus Station after reading this post.— Derek Otieno (@derek_deroo) May 5, 2018

In Short, Our County is Run by Kikuyus ????????????

Wah!wah! What this? Tribalism of the highest order and pple are clapping?????I hope Kagure is not going to be the DG.— Mzalendo (@truthfulkenyan) May 5, 2018

They'll use you and dump you, one need to be smart here to out fit them otherwise utajua hujui# sonko ameshindwa na kazi truth be told, here you must just be tough to survive

I disagree with your proposition, tribe should be a secondary factor while choosing leaders/senior management positions. Let's judge one thro merits

— ???? (@Munge_Junior) May 6, 2018

Merit is not concentrated in one tribe, the composition is not coincidental. #Nairobi.— Solomon Ambuku (@solo_ambuku) May 6, 2018

Nairobi is not a remote rural county you’d expect to find only one community dominating. It’s a capital city itself. It therefore follows that governor @MikeSonko is tribal to dominate his TOP work force with KIKUYUS!!! Where’s the face of Nairobi?— Sam Addy (@samaddy6191) May 7, 2018

This is mediocrity of the highest order. I weep for this country. With such 'leaders' we are yet to sink to the very bottom. Just sad!!— Amuyunzu-Nyamongo (@manyamongo) May 5, 2018
