Mombasa road regarded impassable at sultan Hamud following floods

Mombasa Road is ‘momentarily impassable’, according to Makueni County Commissioner Mohammed Maalim, following floods at a bridge close to Sultan Hamud town that have resulted to a consequential blockage of the road.

Mr. Mohammed has further asked motorists using the road from Mombasa to Nairobi to opt for the Makindu-Wote-Konza-Makutano route while those travelling from the capital to Mombasa to use the Machakos-Wote-Makindu route.

The floods are, reportedly, as a result of a heavy downpour at the neighboring Kajiado county which is a source of the inundated river behind the floods.

At the same time, residents of Sultan Hamud, on waking up to the floods, have lamented about the disaster which has thronged sections of the town. They claim that such a case has occurred regularly before, especially when it rains heavily, with little being done to curb the epidemic.

According to Eunice Mbinya, a resident at Barazani location in Sultan Hamud, the river, which flows through nearby areas including Kiongwani and Barazani, has also affected travelling within these areas making it difficult for her and other locals to access Sultan Hamud. “This river is known for its adversely negative effects especially when heavy rainfall is witnessed at Kajiado and around here. This has been happening for years now. Something needs to be soon since we are unable to go on with our activities with these floods,”she bewailes.

Meanwhile, more misery has ensued on motorists who are currently plying the Mombasa Road at Salama area in Mukaa, where travelling has stagnated for approximately nine hours now. This is as a result of a lorry that had earlier been involved in an accident at the area being unable to be towed away.

Reports by stuck motorists point that the crane supposed to aid in the towing of the lorry has also being involved in another mishap hence making it difficult for the lorry to be moved. However, area OCPD Charles Muthui has asked motorists to remain calm as the issue is being dealt with at the moment.
