I was selling my newborn baby at Sh80,000 to start a vegetable stall, says a middle-aged woman

A 26-year-old lady whose name has been withheld has admitted that indeed he wanted to sell her newborn baby.

Speaking to detectives in Nakuru on Wednesday the woman said that she had already struck a deal with a man purported to be her buyer having agreed on a cash price of Sh80,000.

Upon being asked by the undercover police as to why she was selling her baby she said that she needed capital to set up a stall to sell vegetable so that she can fend for herself.

She further revealed that her husband was abusive and was not providing for her and her two-year-old daughter, who is the first born.

“I wanted to sell the girl because I wanted to set-up a stall which was meant to help me fend for myself now that my husband doesn’t provide for me and my daughter,” said the woman.

The detectives were notified by her neighbour who knew about her deal of selling the newborn baby.

“ On Wednesday evening, the woman, who lives at Mwanga estate went into labour, and her neighbours who knew about her deal notified us,’’ said one of the officers who posed as Mwangi.

David Mwangi, who runs a children's home in Nakuru said that the woman approached her before she gave birth offering to sell her baby immediately after birth at Sh80,000.Mwangi also tipped off the police who posed as the buyer.

The police arrested her after she had received a downpayment of Sh46,000 and signed an agreement. The remaining amount she was supposed to get it through MPesa.
