 How to stay safe online

In an era where our lives are increasingly intertwined with the internet, it is of paramount importance to prioritize online security.

Safeguarding ourselves from potential threats and protecting our personal information should be a top priority.

With the recent attack on Kabarak University's Facebook page, and allegations that the National Intelligence Service (NIS) had been attacked, there are ways of safeguarding yourself on the internet.

Here are 9 crucial tips to ensure your online safety.

Use a strong and unique password:

Protect your online accounts by creating strong and unique passwords. Avoid common choices like "123456" or "password." Instead, use a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols. Using different passwords for each account reduces the risk of multiple accounts being compromised if one is hacked.

Use Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Activate two-factor authentication whenever available. This adds an extra layer of security to your account by having to input a second verification step, mostly a unique code sent to your mobile device in addition to your password. With 2FA in place, even if an attacker gains access to your password, they will still need the second factor to access your account.

Stay vigilant against phishing

Phishing is a cyber-trick where scammers pretend to be trustworthy to steal your personal information. They send fake messages or create bogus websites to trick you into revealing sensitive information like your passwords or credit card numbers.

Always update your system

Regularly update your operating system, web browser and software applications. These updates often include crucial security patches that address vulnerabilities that may be present. By keeping your software up to date you minimize the risk of cyber attackers exploiting known weaknesses.

Use Antivirus and Anti-Malware Software

Install reputable antivirus and antimalware software on your device. This provides strong real-time protection against malicious software and viruses. Regularly update your security software to ensure you have the latest threat detection capabilities and to safeguard your data and privacy.

Guard your personal information

Be mindful of the information you share online, especially on public platforms. Avoid posting sensitive information such as your phone number, area of residence or financial information publicly. By limiting the information you share, you reduce the risk of it falling into the wrong hands.

Be mindful of public Wi-Fi

When accessing the internet in public places, connect only to secure Wi-Fi networks whenever possible. Public Wi-Fi networks can be vulnerable to hackers who may attempt to intercept your data. If you must use an unsecured network, refrain from conducting sensitive activities like online banking or shopping, as your information could be exposed.

Only visit reputable websites

Exercise caution when browsing the internet. Stick to reputable websites, indicated by the padlock symbol in the URL, for downloading files or making online transactions. Avoid clicking on suspicious advertisements or pop-ups that may lead to malware-infected sites. Be cautious of downloading files from unknown sources, as they may contain harmful software.

Stay informed.

Educate yourself about common online scams, phishing techniques, and other cyber threats. Stay updated with the latest news in cybersecurity to recognize and avoid potential attacks and be sceptical of unsolicited emails or messages that sound too good to be true.

Remember, staying safe on the internet is an ongoing effort. Stay informed, be cautious, and regularly review your online security practices to protect yourself and your personal information.
