Virdee wins Kaisugu Golf tourney

Gurdit Virdee won the Kaisugu Limited annual golf tournament held at the Kericho Golf course over the weekend.

Virdee, 17, stunned a field of 102 golfers amassing 40 points to win a Friesian cow in an event that attracted players from Nairobi, Kisumu, Kitale and Kericho.

Virdee playing handicap 4 posted 17 points in the first nine and posted another 23 points in the second nine to beat his challenger Kipsuge Soi on count back who recorded 40 points.

Soi who was playing in handicap 11 posted 21 points in the first nine and another 19 points in the second nine.

He was followed in third place by Peter Owino with 39 points after posting 19 and 20 points in the first nine and second nine respectively.

Owino beat last year’s tournament winner Parminder Hunjan on count back who came fourth with 39 points. He posted 19 points in the first nine and 20 points in the second nine.

The annual event was graced by Kanu national Vice Chairman Gideon Moi.

In Eldoret, Moses Tanui and David Kimutai emerged winners of the fifth leg of the Tusker Malt Golf Carnival that took place at the nine hole Eldoret Golf Club over the weekend.

The team of Tanui playing of handicap 22 and Kimutai of handicap 11 endured the waterlogged course well enough to post 26 points in the front nine and 23 points in the back nine for a team score of 49 points.

Team work

Tanui, who has been playing golf for just six months, expressed his satisfaction with the team score saying it was all about team effort.

"I couldn’t have picked a better partner and despite the challenging course we kept our focus and played a winning game," said Tanui.

At second place and just a point shy of the jackpot was the team of John Anyonyo and Wycliffe Kamanya. Anyonyo (4) and Kamanya (12) scored 23 points in the first nine and 25 points in the last nine for a team total of 48 points. Settling for third place was the team of Jeremiah Kayago (17) and George Njoroge (11) who managed 24 and 24 for 48.

In Limuru, K. Mukuria reigned supreme to clinch the Overall winner prize at this year’s Serena Hotels Golf Day held at the par 72 Limuru Golf and Country Club at the weekend. Mukuria playing off handicap 27 posted 46 points to stun a large field of golfers.
