The prison where former football star Ronaldinho is being detained is set to host a Futsal tournament.
This is according to several news outlets in Europe and South America, which claim the Agrupación Especializada prison will host a Futsal tournament next Monday.
"We don't expect Ronaldinho to participate, but we would like him to attend,” said Commissioner Blas Vera.
The 2005 Ballon d'Or winner and his brother and agent Roberto de Assis Moreira were arrested on Thursday, March 5 for allegedly trying to enter Paraguay using fake passports.
After a grilling session that took more than six hours, it was decided the former football star and his brother would not face trial charges. However, the prosecution chief’s reversed the ruling which offered them the chance to get a plea bargain, leaving police to formally arrest them.
The competition, according to Extra, takes place every six months and usually involves most inmates, who are split into ten different teams.
No prison officers will be involved.
Ronaldinho’s lawyer Adolfo Marin blasted courts for locking up the soccer superstar, saying he wasn’t aware he was committing the crime.
"The courts have not taken into account the fact that Ronaldinho didn’t know he was committing a crime because he didn’t understand he had been given false documents,” said Marin.
