Mathare, Gor Mahia and Leopards register wins

Mathare United moved two points clear at the top of the Sportpesa Premier League (KPL) standings after edging out KCB 2-1 at Kasarani Stadium yesterday.

Cliff Nyakeya netted the first goal for the Slum boys after converting a 13th minute penalty. Cliff Alwanga added a second in the 40th minute.

The bankers who have now gone five matches without a win got their goal through Chrispinus Ochieng in the 86th minute also from the spot.

Mathare United stay at the top of the log with 13 points. The league leaders dominated huge chunks of the match especially in the first half making 280 complete passes.

In Machakos, Gor Mahia returned to winning ways with a 2-0 win over Chemelil Sugar on a day they unveiled former Harambee Stars captain Dennis Oliech.

Oliech is expected to make his debut for Gor Mahia this weekend against Mathare United at Machakos Stadium.

The former Kenyan captain has been given a two-year contract worth Sh8.4million. Boniface Omondi and Nicholas Kipkurui scored a goal each for the KPL champions.

In an early match at the same venue, Kariobangi Sharks failed to bring down Mount Kenya United in a match that ended 1-1. In Kisumu, Western Stima registered their second consecutive draw after a 1-1 tie against Sofapaka at Moi Stadium.

Vincent Odongo’s 52nd minute goal for Stima was cancelled out by Sofapaka skipper Elly Asieche in the 61st minute.

In Nakuru, John Kamau received a rude shock in his first match with Posta Rangers as he went down 2-0 to AFC Leopards at Afraha Stadium.

Defender Robinson Kamura scored the two goals from the spot.
