University show opponents how to achieve success in and out of the classroom.

There is hardly any action during the day as students listen keenly to lectures in various halls.

But when 5pm hits, the whole place bursts into bubbling life as the students trade their books and writing pads for football boots and basketball gear. It’s games time at Zetech University.

Despite being just three years old, the university is creating plenty of ripples in the sports arena.

Over the years, the institution has continued to post outstanding results and stands out as a giant without doubt.

The university has promoted the establishment of a vibrant sports department that oversees the participation of teams in virtually all major disciplines.

For instance, they have three football teams. The main team takes part in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Division One League as well as the Universities and Colleges League.

The second team plays in the FKF Aberdares League in Kiambu, while the third acts as a feeder to the two sides.

The university also has three teams for basketball - Titans feature in the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) top league, Sharks play in the Nairobi Basketball Association (NBA) league and Sparks is the women’s team.

The University has also established a rugby team that plays in various tournaments across the country. They also feature formidable teams in indoor sports like taekwondo and karate.

According to Zetech’s Co-Curricular Co-ordinator Alfred Muli, the university’s success in sports is a result of investment and focus on developing all-round students.

“Our determination remains to develop all-round students who can excel not just in the job market but also in sports. This is a well-paying career and also a source of employment,” he said.

Thanks to their prowess on the field and in the classroom, several students have found employment.

For example, Felix Omondi plays for Equity Bank’s basketball team while Frankline Omondi and Joshua Okumu joined the Kenya Ports Authority and Ulinzi basketball teams.

Others like Gilbert Onsongo, Donald Owiti and Gideon Ogweno have joined Kenyan Premier League (KPL) sides Posta Rangers and Ulinzi Stars.

According to Debra Otieno, the support changed her life for good.

“After high school, I did not have money to go to college. When my coach approached me and offered the scholarship, it changed my life,” said Otieno, an Accounting and Finance graduate.
