Nyali junior golfer withstands biting cold to shine at Sigona.

Founded by the Kenya Estates Ltd around 1938 and built and designed by Berkley-Mathews, the par 71 Sigona golf course has some of the most beautiful lush and verdant fairways.

Located in Kikuyu near the Rift Valley and with an altitude of 6,600 feet (2,200m), the club has a hilly course that provides a tough but very pleasant 18 holes of golf.

At times, the weather can be brutal and golfers have to dig deep in their banks for victory. And at the weekend, youthful golfer Agil Is Haq from Coast region braved three days of cold weather to emerge the Kenya Junior Match play 2017 Champion.

The 17-year-old Nyali club golfer and Mombasa light Academy student has been training under the hands of former club professional Kopan Timbe. Agil posted a 2/1 to win the Royal and Ancient (R&A) Trophy in the 16-18 years old category.

He beat Windsor’s Akshay Chandaria to the runner-up slot.

“It’s been cold here but my determination at the course paid off in the end,” said Agil.

The three-day event organised by the Junior golf foundation, saw Windsor’s Taimur Malik win the Windsor trophy in the under-15 on 4/3. Muthaiga’a Njoroge Kibugu was the runner-up.

Royal's Njogu Kungu on 4/3 won the Royal and Ancient plate trophy in the 16-18 years, while Dhiren Gidooomal from Muthaiga was second.

Muthaiga’s Mukundi Muthisi won plate in the Windsor trophy category (under-15 years). Limuru’s Njukia Kihara settled for the runner-up slot.

Meanwhile at Vet Lab, handicap 14 Abraham Samoei on 39 points, won the stable ford event, which was sponsored by the Captain’s kitty.

Handicap 18 Kasaan Virani, on a countback score of 38 points, same as handicap 19 Kennedy Mariga, was the men runner-up.

Handicap 29 Jane Mwangi, on a countback score of 36 points, was the lady winner. She tied on points with runner-up handicap 36 Rose Wanjiku, while handicap 19 Roy Bore, on 34 points, was the guest winner.
