Gor Mahia fans are well-known for their overzealousness, bravado and love for their club.
They are a passionate lot who support their team to the hilt. However, in their expression of this love, they at times go overboard, rubbing others the wrong way — moreso when things go south for them.
However, it is never all gloom at the Green Army, for there are those cherished moments when they dance their way to the monument of the revered independence hero Tom Mboya or gyrate along the city’s streets to celebrate their victories.
But as sweet as it may be, it is never a good experience to rub the Green Army the wrong way. Such an act instantly attracts vitriol. The English tabloid Daily Mail got a taste of that recently for referring to the Green Army as “little known”. It all started with an article on Daily Mail online, which speculated on Wayne Rooney’s likelihood of taking part in Everton’s pre-season match in Tanzanian against the Kenyan glamour club, in which they referred to K’Ogalo as “little known”. In the article, titled, Everton confirm opponents for tour of Tanzania are Gor Mahia FC... but could it be Wayne Rooney’s first game after he returns to the Toffees?
K’Ogalo fans launched an avalanche of attacks on Twitter under the hashtag #SomeoneTellDailyMail. So ferocious were the attacks that Daily Mail was forced to edit their article to correct the impression.
Leading the attack were K’Ogalo’s online choirmasters Tony Anelka and Tom Bwana. The Nairobian samples some of them.
