Aprot bags 10,000m title, Kimitei also shines at Kenya Prisons meet

Africa 10,000m champion Alice Aprot and Africa 10,000m silver medalist Wilfred Kimitei yesterday proved their impressive shows in continental were not flukes.

They won during the Kenya Prisons athletics meet at Nyayo Stadium yesterday.

Aprot won the 10,000m race in 32:15.4 while Kimitei bagged the 5,000m title in 13:37.2.

Kenya Prisons also fashioned out its line-up for the National Athletics Championships set for Nyayo National Stadium on June 20.

Newcomer Cornelius Kangogo and Africa 400m silver medalist Maureen Jelagat also produced brilliant shows much to the delight of huge crowd that included Kenya Prisons Deputy Commissioner General Benjamin Njoga and other senior officers.

Aprot, a fresh graduate from Prisons Staff College in Ruiru, said she is preparing for IAAF World Athletics Championships national trials.

“The race was a bit hard given the hot weather conditions. From here, I will not race again until the trials.

“I really want to make the team for World Championships,” said Aprot who finished fourth at the Rio Olympic Games.

Jelagat, a glowing alumni of Sing’ore Girls, won 100m hurdles without much fuss in 15.2 ahead of Ivyn Chepkemoi (15.4) and Brigid Chelagat (16.3).

Nancy Kimaiyo was too good for her challengers as she won the 3,000m steeplechase in 10.01.2, beating Winfred Mutile (10.06.4) and Immaculate Jebet (10.06.6).

Visiline Jepkesho (16:10.8), the 2016 Paris Marathon winner, bowed to Nancy Nziza (16:06.9) in 5,000m. [Jonathan Komen]
