Ten bodies of West Pokot victims taken to Kitale mortuary

Ten bodies of landslide victims in West Pokot County were on Tuesday received at Kitale county mortuary, Trans Nzoia County health CEC Clare Wanyama told the Standard.

Police in West Pokot County transported the bodies to Kitale after Kapenguria Mortuary was unable to accommodate more bodies.

Rescue teams deployed in areas of the catastrophe have retrieved over 50 bodies since the rescue mission started on Saturday morning.

Some more bodies have been reportedly taken to Eldoret for preservation. The number could not however be verified.

 ‘’It is true we have received 10 bodies at the county referral mortuary following the landslide in West Pokot county,’’ the CEC said.

The bodies from West Pokot County brings to 11 bodies of flood victims to be kept at the facility after that of a boda boda rider was retrieved from Exodus River.

Enos Sasita, 36 was headed to Stabicha area from Mitume in Kitale when he was swept away by raging floods.

Over 300 people displaced by floods at Namanjalala market wants the government to resettle elsewhere and use their farms to grow rice.

They complained that they loss property very year and that the government should provide alternative areas to settle.

“We are asking the government to consider give us alternative land to settle in bid to end these perennial suffering. The state can use our farms for crop production,” said Grace Nekesa.
