Illicit affair: City pastor rejected over 'realms of darkness' in divorce saga

A Nakuru AIC pastor was locked out of church together with the faithful after being linked to a divorce case between two members of his previous church. The pastor was in for a rude shock last Sunday after he and his flock found the church gate and doors locked. A section of the church members who arrived earlier held hands and made a prayer before heading back home. On arrival, the pastor and a handful of congregants managed to open the gate but he restrained the faithful from forcing their way into the church building to avert destruction of property. He led a brief church service under a tree in the church compound during which he downplayed the embarrassing scene, terming it the doing of a few individuals. "The spirit of division is from the realms of darkness. It will not defeat the church of Christ. We will progress for we know who is there for us," said the pastor. The man of cloth revealed that he was aware of a section of members who wanted to bring him down but this would soon be over after the church conducts its elections. "I am announcing that the church is not even this building. We shall overcome. This is a small turbulence. We shall have our elections on November 12 and set everything in order," he said. He further announced that contrary to the usual two services every Sunday, the church would be conducting a single service inside the church if opened or under the tree until after the elections are done. Nakuru Area AIC Bishop John Maina, and pastors from other nearby AIC churches visited the church on Monday to deliberate on the matter. "It is normal for a pastor and his flock to differ at some point. I am being briefed on the matter but in the meantime, going forward I shall send someone who shall be ministering or I will be coming here myself," said Bishop Maina. He was however reserved to reveal the fate of the pastor, saying that the matter was being handled. "The church has its internal structures which handle matters, if at all there is any. We are praying. We shall have an election as gazetted," said Maina. Intervention The Nairobian however got a copy of a letter dated October 5, 2023 addressed to the national leader of the AIC Church Archbishop Abraham Mulwa seeking his intervention in the case. In the letter, AIC Lanet church leadership cited a divorce case between a Gilgil-based military Major and his wife, with the pastor accused of causing the division. "Reference is hereby made to a letter dated November 3, 2022 written by Major (name withheld) addressed to Nakuru Bishop) concerning the conduct of a pastor in relation to his love affair with Major's wife," the letter begins The letter signed and stamped by church officials indicates that the military officer made a complaint against the pastor after he found out that he was having an illicit affair with his wife while he was deployed to Somalia. Following the complaint, the cleric was instructed to proceed on a two-month compulsory leave as investigations were conducted. "An Area tribunal instructed by you (Archbishop Mulwa) to handle the case, issued a declaration terminating the case disregarding an earlier arrangement that Safaricom certifies the genuineness of messages between the pastor and Major's wife," the letter read further. "It is also worth noting that there is a divorce case in court filed by Major against his wife and mentioning the reverend as the cause of the divorce," the letter adds. The Nairobian has also seen an email written by the military man protesting the tribunal's declaration even as he pursues legal redress. "I strongly express my strong dissent with the recent decision rendered by the tribunal hence my appeal. The judgment was marred by flaws and failed to align with moral and ethical principles upheld by the church. I currently have a case against my spouse at the Nakuru Law Courts," the military man says. The military officer has also attached screenshots of text messages alleged to be between his wife and the preacher, with the wife asking him to stay away from her as she seeks to save her marriage.
