Mbuthia rules the roost at Kenya Power Festival of Golf at Nakuru Club

Fred Mbuthia emerged the overall winner of the on going Kenya Power Festival of Golf at the Nakuru Golf Club at the weekend.

Mbuthia, enjoying his home course, carded a total of 44 stableford points to rule the roost in the day-long event dubbed Easy Pay Golf Tournament.

Darjit Hunjan was the men winner after posting a total of 42 points, while Samuel Mwangi followed him closesly in the men runner-up position on 41 points and Samir Didhia was third on 39 points.

In the ladies category, Nancy Muhia was in a class of her own as she won on 40 stable ford points, but was closely followed by Esther Karuga on 39 points while Nanice Gichinga ensured that the ladies produced some of the best scores in the competition as she returned 37 points to win the third prize in the ladies’ category.

Krishan Sarna was the junior winner on 34 points, while Mercy Kebaara won the staff prize on 27 points and Peter Mungai had the piga mingi prize after amassing a mere 12 points.

The first nine prize went to J Manyara on 21 points and second nine prize was won by Rev Patrick Gitonga on 22 points. George Gitau registered the men’s longest drive and B. Ndenderu posted the women’s longest drive in the competition.

At the par 72 nine hole Kiambu Golf Club, Gladys Athiru stunned seasoned golfers to emerge the overall winner of the on going Kenya Airways Golf Safaris.

Athiru posted an impressive 46 points, beating her closest challenger by four strokes, to be crowned the day’s best and in the process earned a ticket for the Safari’s grand final slated for next month.

Third spot

Robert Chutha was the runner-up on 42 stableford points, while Anthony Njoroge had to be beat Wanyoike Kiarie on countback to settle for the third spot on 40 points. Wanyoike also posted 40 points.

Lucy Karau was the lady winner on 41 points, while Boniface Njoroge won the junior prize on a comprehensive 41 points.

Stephen Gitau had the men longest drive, while Njoki Nderitu registered the ladies’ longest drive and Ngatia Rithari had the nearest to the pin.

The red ball team winners comprising of Paul Kaumbutho, Martin Mutuma, David Nyaga and Robert Chutha posted 43 points, with the team of Lennox Mutua, James Waweru, Joseph Kiaro and Jones Karicho finishing second on 39 points.

A total of seven players at the tournament qualified for the Grand finale. They include overall winner Gladys Athiru (46pts), Robert Chutha (42pts), Lucy Karau (41pts), Jones Karicho (40pts), Anthony Njoroge (40pts), Wanyoike Kiarie (40pts) and Jane Njoroge (40pts).
