St Albert’s Ulanda High: Where girls are liberated through education

Old school

St Albert’s Ulanda Girls High School was established in 1967 to liberate women through education. However, it was not until four years later that it enrolled the first A-Level science class. It is located in Sakwa location, Migori County. In 2016, the school made news headlines when one of its Form Two students was hit by a stray bullet during Lake Region second term ball games.

The student got herself in the crossfire when a prison warder was in hot pursuit of a jailbird that was escaping. The school was also in the news when Form Three students started manufacturing bottled water. The school has endorsed three official language, English, Kiswahili and French and does well in basketball and volleyball. The current principal is Mrs Phinorah Buyengo. 

Those who recited the school motto, “Aspire to Excellence”, clad in navy blue skirts and sweaters and white blouses include Eunice Amamo, the Deputy principal at Archibishop Okoth Ojolla Girls High School;  Lynne Odiwa, a Public Relations Research Consultant; Mary Odiyo of ILRI; Rose Omollo, an Agribusiness Management Officer at Diageo; Dr Awuor Ondeng, Registrar at Moi University School of Medicine; Beatrice Owino, Customers Service Advisor at KRA; Roselyne Dodoh of Vivo Energy Kenya; and Benter Akeyo, an educational consultant with KICD.

Others who retired to Barlin, Leo A & B, St Joseph’s, St Theresa’s and St Aquinas dorms include Khajia Abbas, an Activities Manager with ACE Network; Carolyne Ogutu, a Marketing Manager with TRM Holding; Mercy Odeny of Hashi Energy Company; Amina Ogembo, an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya; Cloy Achola, a nurse at Rachuonyo Hospital; Golda Ayodo, the CEO at Golden Girls Foundation; Jemimmah Nyakwara, who is an ICT guru at UNDP.

There is also Linda Swaga, a Senior Sports Developer at Pwani University; Christine Isanda, an Assistant Manager with Britam; Asenath Adienge, who works as an Assistant Research BiotechnologIST with Kenya Forestry Research Institute; Renah Priscah, a Quality Assistant and Standards Officer in Homa Bay; Philomena Achola, a HR Assistant at Gusii Water and Sewarage Company.

Throw in Dorothy Omollo, the Branch Manager at KCB Homa Bay; Grace Omare, an Occupation Health Nurse at KPRL; Grace Muok, a HR Officer at KRA; Seline Karwa, a data analyst at KNCHR; and Emmaculate Indah, a Relationship Manager, Corporate Schemes at NIC bank.

There is also Carolyne Oyagi, a Senior Laboratory Technician at Kenya Petroleum Refineries and Dr Iddah Kelly, a Health Economist at Paediatric Pharmacist.
