Flood victims want transparency in relief cash transfers

Flood victims in Mathare slum now claim that transfers of relief cash promised by the State are being carried out in a dubious manner.

The displaced families have claimed that the money could be landing in the pockets of undeserving individuals who were not affected by the flood disaster.

This comes weeks after the State promised to support affected households with Sh10,000 each.

"Very few people affected by floods have received the funds, so far we have witnessed undeserving people getting the cash,” Odhiambo Aduda, a resident, claimed.

He said hundreds of victims who were displaced from their homes and have been staying in nearby schools have now been ordered to vacate.

During President William Ruto's recent visit to the slums, the flood victims were promised that their rents would be paid to help them ease the burden in their recovery process.

The residents have however decried that they are yet to see any help and sought for transparency in the process.

“Our appeal is for the authorities to identify the genuine families who were affected by the floods and help them recover," John Omwanda, another resident appealed.

The Mathare residents are among thousands displaced by floods after heavy rainfall ravaged the country in recent weeks, killing over 200 people and displacing thousands of others.

They said they are now surviving at the mercy of well-wishers.
