There is great football talent in Kenya fit enough to be selected to the national team, Harambee Stars, former captain and Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Instructors Musa Otieno (pictured) and Peter Kamau have said.

Otieno said that Nakuru county has abundance of talent and all what the region needs is qualified coaches who can scout young players.

“With qualified coaches, the region will be in a position to compete with the rest of the country in playing for the national team,” Otieno said during the Nakuru Coaches seminar yesterday.

His sentiments were echoed by Kamau, who said: “This is a region that should not struggle to have its player selected into national teams. What they need is qualified coaches to  impart the required skills into the youngsters for them to become top players.”

He said their aim is to build capacity for coaches for them nurture quality and talented players.

“We want to empower coaches technically and tactically so that we can enhance their capacity of producing quality players. We would like to see Nakuru produce best players like they did in the seventies and eighties,” said Kamau who featured for Shabana, Kisumu Posta and Eldoret KCC during his heydays.

“Our mission here is to ensure all coaches in the branch attain required qualifications recognised by CAF and FIFA.

He added: “Once we have enough qualified coaches, it will be easier for us to identify quality players. Our aim is to produce quality players from this region who can compete with others selected from different parts of the country.”

FKF vice president Doris Petra said they have started to roll out training of coaches to spur growth in the sub county and county leagues.

“We must adhere to CAF and FIFA requirement to avoid our coaches being rendered jobless in the modern football,” Petra said.
