Divock Origi scores on Liverpool debut as Reds thrash Thailand All Stars 4-0

Divock Origi scored Liverpool's final goal with a powerful header on his Reds debut as Brendan Rodgers' side beat True Thai All Stars 4-0  at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok on Tuesday.

The Liverpool striker wrote on his twitter account that it was an "amazing feeling" to make his first appearance for the club during a pre-season friendly this afternoon.

Origi initially signed for the Reds last summer before being loaned back to former club Lille for the 2014-15 season, but the Belgian was finally able to turn out in a Liverpool shirt in their opening pre-season clash.

Brendan Rodgers saw Liverpool kick-off pre-season with a win in monsoon conditions - then officially washed his hands of last season.

The Kop boss watched his stars romp to an opening summer tour win to start a new era without iconic skipper Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling.

It may only have been victory against minor opposition - but for Rodgers it was a symbolic night that ushers in a fresh start for him and Liverpool after their dismal sixth place finish in May.

“We have learned from last season and now the door is closed. We move on from that,” said the Anfield manager.

“We are working very hard to develop a team and hopefully go on and cope with the demands of next season.

“I’ve been really pleased with the quality and work of the players. If we are going to impress it is going to be about the team and a lot of our work will be done on our team and our spirit and because we want quality.”

As Sterling’s £49million move to Manchester City was finally confirmed 6,000 miles away, Rodgers heralded the striker he hopes will be Liverpool’s new hope - £10million Divock Origi.

The Belgian attacker could have had a hat-trick after hitting a post twice. But eventually he scored on his debut with a thundering header from a Jordan Henderson corner against Thai All Stars to wrap up the goals in the Rajamangala Stadium.

And Rodgers was full of praise for the 20-year-old who could start the season in place of injured Daniel Sturridge unless Liverpool spend big again on another front man.

Rodgers said: “I thought Divock was excellent. You can see his movement and what really pleased me tonight was his persistence.

“He had a couple of chances he missed that he he would want to score but he kept going and was very positive.

“He showed how good he is in the air, it was a great cross into the box and a great header that he scored.”

Rodgers played two entirely different teams in each half giving Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan and Joe Gomez their debut’s in the first 45 minutes.

And after the break he sent out Nathaniel Clyne, James Milner and Origi for their bow as torrential rain threatened to water-log the pitch and bring the game to a halt.

A cool finish from Lazar Markovic and a header by Mamadou Sakho put Liverpool into a 2-0 first half lead, doubled by Adam Lallana and Orgi second half.

And that at least provided some cheer for Rodgers as he headed down to Australia for Liverpool’s next game against the Brisbane Roar on Friday.
