Outdated interior decor trends to leave behind

Like any other trend, interior design trends change. What was in 50 years ago isn't necessarily what people love now, so it's to be expected that trends will continue to evolve.

For the past decade we've been moving towards trends like white walls and gold decor, and now we're entering a new era. Of course, that doesn't mean we have to throw everything out and start all over again, because it will always come down to what we personally like.

That said, there are a few trends that should be on their way out. Here are five interior design trends that have officially run their course:

Mass produced art

Having art in your home is like the cherry on top. It might not be the main focus but, it still makes a powerful statement.

For some time now, mass produced art pieces have been all over. The most common ones right now are hexagon mirror sets, pineapple sculptures and generic quotes.

There is nothing wrong with these pieces but, they’re quite overdone now. You can swap these out for pieces that are more unique and personal.

Matching everything

If you’re a novice at interior décor, the easiest thing to do is match everything. People have been matching their seats, pillow cases and curtains and even choosing one color throughout an entire room.

There are different ways to maintain a visual flow in your home without having to match everything. You could easily get some inspiration on how to pull off different patterns, textures and color schemes just by checking out apps like Pinterest.

Whites and greys

These two colors have been a huge trend, even now. We have been living in the age of minimalism so more people desired to have a crisp white or grey color scheme to match popular celebrity homes.

In the next couple of years, there will be a shift towards more color, warmth and vibrancy as compared to the boring whites and greys that we have been used to. In fact, people are starting to agree that this trend has been overdone so if you’re planning to upgrade your decor, think outside the box.

Stiff minimalism

Speaking of minimalism, another trend that needs to die is boring minimalism. Minimalism itself is about utilizing needs but that doesn’t mean your only option is to have a dull, uninspiring home.

You can still maintain a minimalist home with a few but interesting pieces, as well as adding some texture instead of having smooth surfaces throughout the home. Having color will also enhance how your space feels.

Geometric shapes and patterns

We have also seen lots of geometric furniture, wall art and patterns in almost every home. These get the job done but they’re not exactly exciting anymore.

For a less stiff and more expressive home, you could now look into getting irregular shaped tables, art pieces as well as choosing less structured patterns. This will help your home feel more authentic and less office-like.
