How to ensure that your jewellery becomes long-lasting

Most of us were drawn to jewellery from childhood. Jewellery is among a woman’s most-treasured possessions. If you take care of your jewellery, it can last a lifetime.

I have worn my rings for over a decade and they cannot come off. Although they seem to be in good condition, quite a few stones have fallen off - stones that I can’t afford to replace. As a result, I have had to learn the value of taking care of my jewellery.

Here are the things you should avoid:

1. Don’t store your jewellery in several places

If you have different spots where you store your jewellery, such as a bedside table, jewellery box, or dressing table, then you’re more likely to lose it or misplace them. Just as you have a designated place for your phone, shoes or house keys, you should have one particular place where you keep your jewellery.

2. Don’t swim with your jewellery

Chlorine and salt water can damage it irrespective of the material. Even high value metals such as gold and platinum can be affected. Chlorine can discolor metals and even erode the finish of your gemstones.

3. Don’t forget to clean your jewellery

The buildup of dried lotion, food, and dirt may damage or dislodge stones on your jewellery. The gems stones are usually very small, therefore if you lose one, you probably won’t find it. To clean your pieces, use a soft toothbrush with warm soapy water. Clean them at least once every six months.

4. Don’t store your jewellery carelessly

Rather than throwing your necklaces into a jewellery box where they’ll get tangled , clasp them and hang them on a necklace tree or put them in a case. If you get a knot, put the necklace on a flat surface and use a pin to gently untangle it. Jewellery boxes that contain individual slots for rings, necklaces, and earrings, are ideal.

5. Don’t wear your jewellery all the time

If you can, remove your jewellery off before workouts and showers. Depending on the material and how delicate it is, wearing your it all the time could result in damage.

6. Don’t expose it to light and heat

When exposed to excess sunlight, delicate gemstones such as topaz, pearls and amethyst can fade and lose their durability. Excessive heat can also cause stones to crack and fall off.
