Trader denies obtaining Sh2.3m diapers, issuing 8 bad cheques

Living

A city businesswoman charged with 10 counts among them obtaining goods by false pretense and issuing bad cheques severally has denied the accusations.

Daisy Jepchumba Kibet jointly with others not before the court through her company, Dupont Investment Limited, obtained 55 bales of adult diapers worth Sh337,000 on November 16, 2020, from Caroline Wanjiku Maina at Pangani, Starehe Sub- County by falsely pretending that she was in a position to sell the same and remit the proceeds.

On November 29, 2020, Jepchumba with her accomplices again obtained 300 bales of adult diapers worth Sh1,950,000 through Nappy Wears Limited pretending to sell them and give her the money.

Jepchumba is further accused of issuing bad cheques eight times from her bank account with Stanbic bank whose value was between Sh215,000 and Sh255,000 from November 12, 2020, to April 15, to Caroline Wanjiku's account in Cooperative Bank.

First batch

According to the investigations, Jepchumba approached the complainant requesting her to deliver the first batch of 55 bales of adult diapers with a promise of completing the payment within 14 days.

Barely two weeks later, the accused again through a different company in which she was among the directors approached the complainant using the same trick to deliver the 300 bales this time through a different company.

She is said to have used the same tricks of not paying on delivery but lied to the complainant that she will deposit the money into the complainant's account, something which did not yield fruit after issuing close to eight bouncing cheques.

She was reported to the authorities who went looking for her in vain. She is alleged to have changed her abode. Also, she is said to have evaded the police several times until it took the intervention of a telecommunications company to help trace her.

Through her lawyer, Jepchumba contested the allegations of relocation saying she had to move to her new home after her then-landlord at Donholm evicted and auctioned her property.

State prosecutor Cosmas Kilambyo urged the court to grant her stringent bond following claims that the accused had been playing hide and seek with the police.

"Police summoned her to the station but she failed to show up. She evaded policed dragnet and was later arrested in her new apartment."

Having considered the applications, the court granted her a bond of Sh300,000 pending a hearing on March 15, 2023.
