University plans to produce electricity from sugarcane

Living

Kibabii University (KIBU) has begun work on a project to turn sugarcane bagasse into charcoal briquettes for the local community.

This is done to maximize the use of sugarcane 'waste' collected from sugarcane millers in the country's western region.

According to the project's leaders, Dr Joshua Abuya and Dr Jonathan Muthonyi, the bagasse could also be used to generate electricity, which would benefit the locals who live near the institution. This is one of the projects being run by the Bungoma-based institution to advocate for environmentally friendly electricity production.

The establishment of Kibabii University (KIBU) is traced to the origins of Kibabii teachers' training college which is the precursor to the current Kibabii University. For more than twenty years, the proposed Kibabii Teachers Training College in Bungoma South district remained a mere dream. On 19th September 2007, His Excellency President Mwai Kibaki graciously presided over a groundbreaking ceremony at the proposed site.
