A 28 year-old man has been arrested in Narok for attempting to bribe Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) recruitment officers with Sh100, 000 to have his brother join KDF in the ongoing exercise.

Johnson Dunkul Keshe was arrested at Ololung'a recruitment centre on Wednesday in Narok North for giving out the bribe to have his brother Felix Sankale Keshe, 24, recruited the following day (Thursday) at Maasai Mara University grounds recruitment center.

Speaking to the press, the KDF recruitment officer Lieutenant Colonel Erick Oloo said the man approached the recruiting officers with the cash with an intention of influencing the exercise in favour of his younger brother.

"We were at Ololung'a when one man came with Sh100,000 cash and attempted to bribe our officers but instead, they got hold of him together with his brother who was to be recruited and we handed them over to the police," Said Oloo.

The KDF recruiting officer however said apart from the bribery incident, the exercise went on well apart from few incidences where recruits turned up with photocopies of their certificates and some with 2010 KCSE result slips which were rejected.

"Kenyans are wasting their money and assets attempting to bribe for jobs in KDF. We are a free and fair force and we discourage any form of corruption. Those involved in the bribery incident should face the law to serve as a lesson for others with similar intentions," said Oloo.

Narok County Criminal Investigations Officer John Mulaulu said they are holding the two suspects for interrogations and will be arraigned in court to be charged with attempted bribery.

"We are holding the two men who are brothers for attempting to bribe a KDF warrant officer Gideon Muchiri with Sh100, 000 to have his brother recruited," said Mulaulu.

The KDF Chief recruiting officer Brigadier John Waroba who was traversing various recruitment centres hailed the manner at which the exercise was being conducted saying that fairness and transparency was their cardinal principle.

While launching the recruitment exercise earlier this week which targets 2,000 recruits, Vice-Chief of Defence Forces Joseph Kasaon revealed that potential recruits had lost Sh52 million to fraudsters during recruitments since 2009.

The Department of Defence also revealed 54 military service personnel who were involved in taking bribes to facilitate the recruitment and were sacked in the last six years.
