In less than one month, more than 10 students have lost their lives in instances which could have been avoided.
Seven students from St Martins Academy in Murang’a drowned last week in the Indian Ocean while on an educational tour. The Diani tragedy happened just a few days after another incident where two students of Stephjoy Secondary in Limuru perished in a dormitory fire believed to have been started by fellow students.
In both instances, the basic rules on safety of students appear to have been compromised.
In the just concluded music festival in Kisumu, a number of schools opted to transport their students at night against the rule that prohibit night trips for students.
In some boarding schools, caretakers and duty masters stay outside institutions as students are at night locked in dormitories without emergency exists.
It is sad that almost a week after the Diani tragedy, there has been no official communication from the Ministry of Education on the same, casting doubt whether the ministry has the interest of students at heart. In more civilised societies, the Cabinet secretary and officials in charge would have quit.
