'Mateke' singer, Size 8, talks about her car and road phobia

Living

Size 8Do you have accessories in your car that bring out some individuality and style?

I have added neon lights all round and forge lights plus a new sound system. I have not done much with the interior because it is already chic and classy. The only thing I have added to the interior is a maroon pillow just to introduce a touch of Linet.

What do you love most about your car?

It is unique and sleek. I am unique in the way I dress and a carry myself and so I wanted a car that would represent that. In my line of work, you need to have a car that stands out.

Do you travel with a whole wardrobe in the car?

Yes I do. I carry about three pairs of extra heels and accessories such as bangles, earring. I also carry extra clothes and make-up; you never know when you will be called for a meeting or to perform.

Do you drive your car or do you have a driver?

I rarely drive my car. I have a driver who drives me around town, and whenever he is not around, I hitch a ride with my husband — DJ Mo.

Why don’t you drive yourself?

I am scared to drive, especially when the road is busy. Jogoo Road in particular is overwhelming — there is too much drama on that road. If I am on a road where there are matatus overlapping everywhere, bikes are all over, and then add mukokoteni to the mix. I get a panic attack. I always have this fear that if I found myself in such a mix, I get out of the car and leave it behind, then ask someone to come for it. My panic attacks are that bad. I can drive but usually on roads that are not too busy.

Do you know how to change a tyre?

I know it sounds cliché but I do not know anything about cars. I am totally dependent on my driver and hubby on matters cars. They tell me when the car needs servicing or when something is wrong.

Are you a manual or automatic kind of girl?

Automatic works just fine for me.

Are you a speed hog or are you one of those ladies who is never in a hurry on the road?

I love and appreciate speed but not when I am a passenger in the car. I love to watch other cars speed by. My husband always complains whenever he gives me a lift because I ask him to slow down.

What one thing have you learnt now that you never knew before you owned a car?

A car is expensive to manage. This machine is definitely not an asset, it is an expensive luxury. Everything from fuel, to spare parts, to maintenance is costly.

What advice would you give a new car owner about owning a car?

Before you buy a car, make sure find out everything about the type of car you are interested in. Find out how much it would cost to fuel it daily, whether the spare parts are readily available and the general cost of maintenance.

What is your dream car and why?

A red Ferrari. In fact, the reason I bought my current car is because it looks almost like a Ferrari.
