Youth complains of being locked out in financing of sports

Youth in Central Kenya are now seeking an explanation on why the government locked them out in financing various programmes meant to promote sports and cultural activities. The over 100 youth drawn from the six constituencies in Nyeri county are now asking the National Treasury to explain why they were left out in funding for such activities during the 2016/17 financial year. Led by Ms Rose Wambui Komu alias Waikundi, they wondered why the government set aside sh 1.5 billion for improving sports facilities in Eldoret, Mombasa and Kisumu but left out the entire region. "During the presentation of budget proposals, Finance Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich revealed that sh1.5 billion would be used for improvement of sports and cultural activities in the three towns," Wambui observed. She said most of the sportsmen's in the region are now wondering why they were edged out and not included in this projects aimed at encouraging the youth to participate in sport rather than wasting precious time consuming illicit brew. The region, she stated has great potential in sports and cultural affairs and it's very unfortunate that it was locked out. "I will mobilize the youth to draw a petition to the national government, protesting over this kind of discrimination if nothing is done to rectify the situation," Ms Waikundi said at 's Gakawa sub location in Nyeri area where she had sponsored a Youth Volleyball tournament. The sh1.5 billion is among sh 21.1 billion that CS Rotich said has been set aside for Gender and Youth Empowerment programmes that will be targeting Youth, Elderly and Vulnerable in the Kenyan society.
