#My word: So much to ‘tolerate’

This is definitely a year of showing human kindness, understanding and tolerance.

Last year was tough, and for most of the world, the nightmare isn’t over yet. For some, the nightmare has just reached its peak.

The rest of us are still nursing bruises and as we wince and try to squirm to our feet, we are constantly looking over our shoulders lest we are hit by another one.

And so we’re trying to be gentle, trying not to judge, trying not to pester, trying not to press too hard, trying to listen, trying not to take offence, trying not to be quick to anger… the list goes on.

But then there are those waiting to take advantage of our ‘humanity’. Those using 2020 as a crutch and buying the time and patience that’s been accorded to them so they can sleep a little longer, bask in the sun/lie in the shade a little longer.

Meanwhile, patience is running out for those who have been trying so hard to be ‘tolerant’. They are beginning to suspect that some people are taking them for a ride. And unfortunately, once they discover that they have been duped, the people who genuinely need their patience and tolerance will be left high and dry.

The truth is, we must look at things with a different eye now. We must weigh our abilities and know our limits. Our capacity to love and accept must be tested.

Yes, we will be duped and taken advantage of and we must learn to never be fools again. Yet while we grow a thicker skin to protect ourselves, we must remind ourselves of the reason we do good.

Do we do it for fame? Do we do it for love? Do we do it for praise? Do we do it for the returns? Which returns?

Check your reasons and adjust accordingly.
