Why you must oil your hair

 Putting oil on your hair and scalp is a healthy practice that enhances hair growth and a healthy scalp. It involves the selection of right hair oil and correct way of application. It also provides exceptional relief from stress and cures headaches and migraines by offering relaxation. Oil also helps improve blood circulation on the scalp. Apart from the aforementioned, it is important to oil the hair at least twice a week because:

• Moisture: Oil protects the hair and scalp and ensures healthy growth; the sebum produced by the scalp is not sufficient for this purpose. It also keeps the moisture content in the hair high.

• Sebum imbalance: The amount of sebum secreted varies depending on our health. Illness can cause the scalp to be too oily or too dry. Medication too, interferes with the secretion of sebum. Oiling it will thus help restore a healthy scalp and recharge hair growth.

• Nourishment: Natural oils are rich in various vitamins and other nutrients. Oils such as castor, coconut, almond, and olive oil provide direct nourishment to the hair roots.

How to oil the hair

It is always a good idea to have the pores of your scalp dilated so that they can absorb the oil faster. You can sit under a hair steamer to dilate the pores or use the towel therapy to dilate the pores. Heat the towel by dipping it in hot water. Wrap the hot towel on your head for about five minutes repeating the process three to four times for best effect. Remove the towel. Heat the hair oil in warm water, divide your hair into small sections then apply the oil using your finger tips. It would be easier if you have someone apply it for you. Massage the oil onto the scalp one section at a time. When done with the scalp, oil the hair shafts starting from the roots to the tips. You can the embark on massaging the entire scalp using gentle circular motion to help the oil get absorbed faster and also help you relax.
