Cleansing is a skincare essential. It helps get rid of dirt and dead cells build up to let the skin breathe and remain healthy.

Skipping this crucial step in skin care can lead to skin problems such as rashes, acne and dull skin appearance. If your excuse for neglecting to cleanse is that cleansers are expensive, it's time to look for a new excuse.

The ingredients you need to make your own cleanser are right there in your kitchen! Natural cleansers are also a safe bet if you have sensitive skin.

Plain yoghurt

This is an easily available, and cost-friendly kitchen staple which comes in handy as a cleanser-and you only need two or three tablespoons! Plain- not flavoured- yoghurt can also be used as a makeup remover and toner.

The lactic acid and probiotics in yoghurt nourish and cleanse the skin, leaving it feeling fresh and looking radiant. Coat the yoghurt on your face and let it sit for several minutes before rinsing it off with lukewarm water. You can also add natural honey to this cleanser to give it an antibacterial element.

Tomato

Not only are tomatoes good for eating, they are also great for soothing and refreshing skin. Lycopene in tomatoes has numerous benefits to the skin including curing acne and pimples, shrinking open pores, brightening complexion, reducing tan marks, and preventing the formation of wrinkles.

A simple application of fresh tomato pulp onto the skin can work wonders. Cut a tomato into two, and rub it into the skin in circular motions. Alternatively, make a tomato puree and apply it to your skin. Wash off after 10-15 minutes, repeat thrice weekly for best results.

Papaya

This delicious tropical fruit, readily available in Kenya, is one of nature's best skin cleansers. The enzyme papain in papaya has been shown to help with skin whitening, sloughing off dead skin, repairing ageing skin, and removing unwanted hair.

The fruit is also packed with vitamins A, C, and E and minerals like magnesium, potassium, and folate- all of which are beneficial to skin health. Mash ripe papaya and apply it to your face, neck, and chest. Leave for 10-15 minutes before rinsing it off.
