It’s no secret that the number of people going for plastic surgery procedures is on the rise. Statistics are showing that the [plastic surgery] market is likely to grow even more over the next couple of years, so it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

These days, plastic surgery isn’t only for women. More men and even teens are going under the knife, proving how popular it has become.

Plastic surgery can be categorized into cosmetic surgery and reconstructive procedures. Cosmetic surgeries have more to do with beauty while reconstructive is about helping patients who have been through some type of physical trauma like a burn, cleft lip among others.

Still, why are so many people getting cosmetic procedures done?

Here are some of the major reasons why people are spending tons of cash to improve their appearance.

Social media influence

This is one of the major reasons why more people are visiting surgeons today. Since people see their favorite celebrities changing their bodies, it’s become a necessity now. Also, the filters we see on these platforms have made people want to change themselves. Some actually want to be transformed into a real life filter so that they look exactly how they do on videos and photos. Basically, we are so used to the virtual world of social media so much that it has gained the power to control our lives to that extent.

Changing beauty standards

Even outside social media, the influence of cosmetic surgeries is still present. The beauty ideal has changed especially in the past decade, which makes people want to fit into those standards. One day it’s a slim type figure and the next it’s a big bust and huge butt. With these changes, people are feeling pressured to look a certain way.

Obsession with perfection

Many who undergo these procedures openly admit that their ultimate goal is to look perfect. This chase for perfection has now created an obsession with surgeries. You might first go to get your jaw defined and then realize that you want it to balance out with your nose. So you go to get your nose done and then realize that it wouldn’t hurt to get a cheek lift while at it. In essence, the cycle never truly ends because there will always be a need to change something that’s not as perfect as you need it to be.

Improving quality of life

Some go under the knife to increase their overall confidence and happiness. If someone feels like their breasts are causing back pains or hindering them from doing certain things, they could easily go for breast reduction surgery. This is a classic example that not every procedure has to do with a vain search for ‘beauty.’

Low self esteem

This is one of the major driving forces behind the trend. When you are driven by the urge to be accepted and validated by other people, your self-value constantly changes depending on what they think about you on that particular day. And most of the time, people want validation from strangers through likes and shares. Unfortunately, things don’t always work out as intended. Many have to come to regret changing their physical appearance.

For those who may still feel the need to undergo surgery, it is important to have it done by a qualified and trusted cosmetic surgeon. This is because some of these procedures are irreversible and could lead to death or other health complications if not dealt with carefully.
