‘I’ve got nothing to wear,’ says every woman despite having a wardrobe that is bursting at the seams.

One of my daily struggles is picking an outfit to wear to work. I have managed to streamline my wardrobe after I cleared it of clothes I didn’t wear or like, but even this hardly did the magic. This got me looking at capsule wardrobes as a way to reduce the amount of time I spend putting outfits together every morning.

A capsule wardrobe is a set of clothing items that are season appropriate, ever stylish, and can be paired to create a variety of outfits. The rules vary depending on who you ask but the bottom line is that it should incorporate a few key pieces that you love and are sure to wear over and over again. This doesn’t include ‘extras’ such as pyjamas, workout clothes, outerwear and jewellery.

Let’s look at how to create a capsule wardrobe fit for a work week.

1. Base

This will largely depend on what you like to and can wear to work hence it will vary from woman to woman. Just to give you an idea, you can have a base of a black dress, floral dress, plain skirt, straight leg trousers and a pair of jeans.

2. Tops

Then pick out tops that you can mix and match with your base. Mix them up i.e. plain and printed, long-sleeved and short-sleeved, with and without buttons, different lengths, light or dark-coloured etc.

3. Blazers and cardigans

You can add blazers and cardigans next. Remember you should be able to pair these with your base and tops. I have black, brown and light grey cardigans (you can opt for white). A black blazer is very versatile as are grey and navy and if you want to be a little adventurous, red.

4. Shoes

Again, versatility will be your best friend. Pick out your favourite pair of flats or two in black and animal print, comfiest heels, ankle boots, sandals and sneakers.

Once you’ve set aside your essentials, have a separate storage space for the ‘extras’ and store out of season clothes away until such a time when you will need them. Getting dressed in the morning should be easier now.
