Declared in October 2012 by the United Nations, every year on the 11th of October, the world comes together to observe day of the girl child. The purpose of this day is to support more opportunities being availed to girls as well as increasing awareness on gender inequality and the gender gap faced by girls in the all over the world.
Girls are forced to endure inequality in areas including access to education, proper nutrition, basic legal rights, access to basic medical care, protection from discrimination, forced child marriages, violence among others.
This day is also commemorated to celebrate the success of the girl child, and women who have broken the glass ceiling and sat at the head of the table.
