Girl code: Let me and my life decisions be

Living

In the three and a half decades I have been on earth, I have come to realize that we all are responsible for the choices we make in life and no one should be arm-twisted to follow a certain line of thought. This particularly applies to sane adults who have 100 per cent knowledge of why exactly they are making the said decisions.

See, I don’t understand why someone would condemn another person for buying a house instead of building a house or vice versa. If I want to take a loan and use it to go to Santorini to bask in the sun, unless it’s your sun and you have a problem with me basking in it, your opinion should never leave the comfort of your mouth. The words can travel all the way from your tummy, since that’s the part that hurts most when minding other people’s businesses, to your oesophagus right past your throat and to your tongue. Once they get to your tongue, hold your teeth tight together so that your negative opinion can be sent back. What happened to supporting each other? I was probably born to go on holiday on loan. Why exactly would it itch you yet I am the one going to pay for it through my teeth? Life is too short, as long as I am not stealing any cash, shall we just respect decision boundaries?

These people who own houses but condemn those who decided to invest in personal vehicles before owning houses, do you get into your houses and drive them around for ease of mobility or do you hop into someone else’s vehicle be it PSV or hired? To those who don’t own houses but own cars, do you cook, sleep and relax in those cars after a hard day at work or do you resort to retire in someone else’s house? You see, we all just need to coexist. We were not all cut from the same cloth and so anyone who thinks we all have to have the same school of thought should think again. Everyone has their life planned out as they would wish. Someone will prioritize a holiday over a house or a car and another one will prioritize food over anything. I actually belong to those who believe that food comes before anything else. If I had Sh100 between poverty and I and I was stuck somewhere hungry where the fare home is the same amount, I would rather use the money to buy myself a nice meal then worry about how I would get home later.

There are those people who will take their children to public schools and condemn those in private schools and vice versa. I mean, what really itches you about someone else’s’ life decisions? As long as we are all working towards our dreams, we should desist from veering off our lanes into other people’s lane. Of course, unless we want to cause a crash, a horrific one for that matter since we all move with speed in whichever direction we have chosen to take.

There are those who worship marriage and would do anything to get married before pursuing other dreams in life. That’s their life, not yours. If, according to you, marriage does not even feature in the top ten of your goals, well and good. Go ahead and start with whatever it is that your soul is yearning for. If your dream is to become a professor before you settle down in marriage, by all means, go for it. Don’t let anyone rearrange your dreams for you. What you see in marriage and education isn’t the same thing others would see. Making decisions based on what people are saying is like jumping into the deep end of a swimming pool because that’s what everyone else is doing yet you are not ready to float, leave alone swim. You will drown.
