Natural ways to deal with acne while pregnant

Pregnancy

A good number of women develop acne when pregnant. This is usually caused by the higher levels of hormones that stimulate production of natural oils on the skin. The oils clog up the pores leading to acne. Women who already have oily skin, experienced acne during their teenage years or get break outs during the start of their menstrual cycles are more prone to acne when pregnant.

Unfortunately, taking over-the-counter and prescription medicines during pregnancy is not advised because it can affect your baby and lead to birth defects. It is therefore advisable to avoid them and deal with your acne through proper care of your skin.

Here are safe and all natural ways you can get rid of acne when pregnant. ESTHER MUCHENE 1. Baking Soda Take 1 tablespoon of baking soda and mix it with 1 tablespoon of water. Apply on your spots and affected areas. The application should be to the individual spots and not the entire face. Wait for it to dry then wash it off with warm water. The baking soda works by drying the oil on your skin and thus promotes healing.  2. Turmeric Make a turmeric paste by mixing 1/2 a teaspoon of turmeric with water. Apply it to your acne, leave it for an hour then wash it off. The turmeric is a natural antiseptic and will treat the infection that causes the acne. It will also improve the overall skin tone and texture. Use this paste every day for effective results. 3. Coconut Oil Due to the antimicrobial properties contained in coconut oil, it effectively fights pimple-causing bacteria. To use, first wash your skin and pat it dry. Apply virgin coconut oil as a moisturizer and massage it into the affected area. Leave this overnight. Not only will it fight bacteria but it will also hydrate and nourish the skin.  4. Apple Cider Vinegar Take some apple cider vinegar and mix one-part vinegar with three-parts distilled water. Take a cotton ball and soak it in the mixture then apply to your skin. This will absorb the oils in your skin while also acting as a toner due to the natural occurring enzymes it contains. 5. Aloe Vera For this treatment, make sure you cleanse your face first. After this take an aloe vera leaf and slice it open. Scoop out the gel and place it in a container. Apply the gel to your face and leave it on for an hour before rinsing it out. This will effectively heal your acne as well as rejuvenate your skin. Apply it every night before you go to bed for the best results.  6. Essential Oils  Essential oils such as tea tree oil and lavender oil contain antioxidant, antimicrobial and oil-balancing properties. For this treatment, take 1 drop lavender oil, 4-5 drops of olive oil or coconut oil and 1-2 drops of tea tree oil. Blend or mix them together and apply on your acne. Leave this overnight and use every night on a clean face for the best results. Before using an essential oil, consult your doctor to make sure that you are not allergic to any of them.  7. Honey Honey creates a soothing sensation to the skin because it has antiseptic and antibacterial properties. Rinse your face with warm water first then apply honey to the pimples. Leave it for 30 minutes then rinse it off. 8. Citrus Fruits Lemons and limes contain alpha hydroxy acid that helps unclog pores.  They also contain antibacterial properties that make citrus fruits a great exfoliant. Squeeze some juice from a lemon or lime and apply on the affected areas using a cotton ball. Leave for 10 minutes and then rinse off with cool water. Do a skin test first to determine whether your skin can handle it. Citrus fruits can cause burns when applied directly on sensitive skin without being diluted or watered down. That said, we all have different skin types and not every remedy will work for everyone. Try out the different remedies to find out what works for you. You can test your skin's sensitivity to the ingredients by first testing on a small patch on your upper forearm. If the break out gets out of hand consult your doctor who may recommend a diet plan, supplements or probiotics to be taken orally or topically.
