Of tribeless comrades

You are a poorer person if tribe has a place in your heart and mind. It means you have a closed mind, and that means you will never be open to new ideas and opportunities that diversity brings.

Here is how you de-ethicise yourself. Read History. History will teach you that tribalism, nationalism and other myths that lead us to war rarely solve anything and people always remain divided. But those who found unity of purpose, tend to live better. The reason why people troop to cities and countries like America is to search for opportunities. Where people from various races and backgrounds meet, it becomes a melting pot of cultures and opportunities thrive.

Second, you need to travel. Travel through Kenya and you will discover that a poor man in Kakamega is not any different to a poor man in Nyeri or Marsabit. Years of supporting their sons and daughters have not changed their station in life. Their problems do not need their ‘sons’ to solve them, but anyone with big and better ideas. Travelling will open your mind to acknowledge that we need more visionary leaders.

Last, but not least, learn to tolerate difference and diversity. Even at family level, you have your own differences and preferences. You don’t always have to agree with your family members, but you get along. Transpose that to the national and global society. So, beyond 2017, preach peace, accommodate other ideas
