Tired of what you see in the mirror? Here’s the secret

Skin Care

Is your mirror making you frown? Have you been experiencing dull flaky skin and enlarged pores? Microdermabrasion might be the answer for you. The name may sound intimidating but it is actually quite simple.

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive procedure that gets rid of dead skin cells off the top layer of the skin. It is a deep form of exfoliation in which tiny rough grains are used to buff away the outer layer of the skin. It's origins date back to ancient Egypt in 1500 BC, when the Egyptians would use sandpaper to smooth their skin.

It is an excellent anti-aging procedure and is rated among the top three aesthetic procedures. The benefits include, better hydrated skin, a brighter complexion, treating scarring and sun damage. It also preps the skin allowing moisturisers and other skincare ingredients to be better absorbed.

What you'll need:

Microdermabrasion treatments are usually performed at a dermatologist's office. However, you can make your own safe, gentle treatment with just three ingredients.

Avoid microdermabrasion if you have sensitive or irritated skin, inflamed acne, sunburn, or eczema.

Ingredients

- 2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda

- ½ teaspoon lemon juice or water

- 1/8 teaspoon coconut oil

Step 1 - Prep the skin

Do this by thoroughly cleansing your facial skin, all the way down to your neck and décolletage. Dry your face gently by patting with a microfiber towel or soft face towel.

Step 2 – Prepare the mask

In a clean bowl, mix the ingredients together. If this is your first attempt at microdermabrasion, use plain water rather than lemon juice, as the lemon can be harsh on the skin.

Step 3 – Apply it on your face

Apply gently using your fingertips in an upwards circular motion onto your skin.

Step 4 - Massage

Massage gently for 30 seconds on each section of your face, neck, and décolletage area. The entire process should take 5 – 10 minutes. If you have sensitive skin use gentle strokes and leave it on your face for a shorter time.

Step 5 – Wash off

Rinse thoroughly using lukewarm or tepid water.

Step 6 – Tone

Use toner to refresh the skin, close the pores and eliminate any residue from your face.

Step 7 - Moisturise

Moisturizer to lock in hydration.

Step 8 - Protect your skin

Microdermabrasion increases your skin's sensitivity to sunlight therefore you should keep covered and use sunscreen.

Step 9 – Repeat

To keep your skin looking its best, you should incorporate some form of microdermabrasion weekly or monthly.

Step 10- Timing is everything

Microdermabrasion is generally safe but always do a patch test. If you are on certain medications your skin might be extra sensitive hence this caution. Also, it is best to do it in the evening before retiring, that way, your cells can rejuvenate and recover overnight.
