The ten items in your bathroom that shouldn't be kept there

DIY Fixes and Tips

New advice from household experts suggests millions of homes have been doing things wrong for decades

Razor blades, towels and even bars of soap should NOT be kept in bathrooms, according to the latest advice from household experts.

It also seems millions of homes have been doing it wrong for decades by storing medicines, make up and perfume there too, it added.

Although many of these items have long been found in bathroom vanity units, cupboards or lying out in the open, they will suffer from the heat and humidity of the bathrooms of modern homes in particular.

Power showers, warmer central heating and better insulation all contribute to hot and damp conditions that may be better than stepping out into a freezing room but are no good for many items commonly stored there.

Storing towels in the bathroom is a bad idea

And according to the domestic gurus of House Beautiful this even includes towels and other linen as well as traditional bars of soap.

The magazine unveiled a list of ten items that should not be left lying around or put away in cupboards in today's bathrooms.

Bars of soap should be ditched for liquid soap because the old-fashioned version simply sticks to surfaces and soap dishes creating more cleaning, it advised.

Medicines should be kept at room temperature and may be less effective otherwise, the same goes for makeup whether it is liquid or powder as well as nail polish.

Clean towels stored in bathrooms are susceptible to mildew, books to be read while having a bath will get damaged by the damp air and radios and other non-waterproof electronics could be damaged by the moisture.

Other items will suffer from oxidisation which can make perfume go off, tarnish jewellery left lying around and create rust on spare razor blades, said the report by the magazine.

House Beautiful added: "Never thought about how hot and humid bathrooms affect the things you store in said space? Us neither.

"That's just one of the reasons you might need to find a new home for your makeup, jewellery, towels, and more."

The full list is as follows:

    Bar of soap

    Medicine

    Jewellery

    Makeup

    Perfume

    Non-waterproof electronics

    Linens

    Books

    Nail polish
