It is that time of the year when domestic managers call the shots from whichever angle. This is the time when they will control you like a robot and all you have to do is play along to their music or beat your own drums.
At this point, employers are as desperate like chicks caught in a hawk's cruel talons and are ready to go all the way just to get their domestic managers back from the Christmas holidays.
The lucky employers are smiling all the way to their work places while the unlucky ones have no choice but to start the year on the wrong foot.
My friend Faith was not an exception. Last week, she was all smiles after managing to secure herself a domestic manager. As some of them make a killing during this time from desperate employers, she was quick to announce her willingness to travel to the city to work for Faith but only on one condition -- that Faith sends her the fare.
We both know how they hike the fare when they realise you are desperate.
Okay, to cut the long story short, Faith parted with an arm and a leg during these lean times.
Two days after her helper, Diana, arrived, Faith called me trembling claiming that Diana wanted to beat her up. Before I could even ask her why, she hung up. I called back frantically wanting to know what was up and she was not picking up her phone.
I decided to rush to her house which is not far from mine. Actually, it's only a 10-minute walk. Like a kangaroo which has just brought new life into the earth, I limped to her house. (Remember I told you how hard I had hit the ground after falling off a motorbike two weeks ago?)
Just as I was about to knock on her door, it flew open and right before me was Diana whom I had only met once at the bus station when we went to pick her up. She looked so masculine and for a moment, I contemplated taking to my heels, but what heels? I was already a target for any predator.
I gathered the courage and asked her where Faith was and she just turned and pointed to a corner in the living room. Faith was there, tightly holding onto her son. Diana gave way and I walked in to see the relief in Faith's face when she saw me.
That's when she told me what the problem was. Diana had worked for less than a week but was already asking for her dues claiming she had been offered a better deal somewhere in Roysambu.
Seriously, who does that? She was obviously taking us for a ride. All along she wanted to come to the city and head to Roysambu or whatever that place where stingy middle aged men drive Blue Subarus is called. Hold it, I did not say that, I am only repeating what someone else said. Please don't ask me who it was because my memory fails me especially if it is anything to do with stingy men.
Anyway, Diana wanted to beat up Faith because Faith had said she could only pay her at the end of the month. Diana could hear none of it. My presence there was not of any help either since Diana is twice my size.
Not that I wanted to fight her, no. I was only thinking of 'what if' so I shut my mouth, folded my arms and acted like one of the wall hangings in that house. I had seen enough of WWF videos going viral on social media and I was not going to be part of them.
Let's just say Diana left, with her money...after being transported all the way from the other side of the country! Employers, watch out, do not let your desperation make you bring an aspiring boxer to the city.
Faith was so close to joining me in the kangaroo walk.
