Six Signs your hair needs a trim

Any woman trying to grow her hair hates the thought of cutting the ‘dead ends’. Why? They always feel it deprives them of the long hair they so much yearn for; and defeats the purpose of growing it in the first place.

Interestingly though, trimming the hair makes it healthier and stronger. It is better to have short healthy hair than long and ragged hair. So why don’t we settle for healthier hair? This can only happen if we know the signs to look out for; signs that will tell me it’s time to trim my hair.

Split ends:

The only way to bring an end to split ends is by trimming them. There is no other way out. The split end products in the market only offer a temporary solution. Do not stay with your split ends long since the longer you stay with them, the higher the likelihood that the split ends will turn into split strands, hence, damaged hair. The moment you spot a split end, rush to your hairdresser and have the ends trimmed. Do not worry about losing an inch or two after the trim; it is worth it in the long run.

Damaged hair:

If you are a victim of unhealthy practice like often flat ironing your hair on high temperature, you may experience ends that easily tangle, making it difficult and painful to comb. If the process of detangling your hair starts to become increasingly difficult, it’s time for a cut.

Tangling may be the result of extreme dryness and lack of regular deep conditioning. This is a sign that your hair is damaged and that the damaged bit needs to be removed. Knots are also indicators of weak hair; at every point where a knot occurs, a hair strand gets weakened – it is time to trim your hair.

Shapeless hair:

When your hair is out of shape, has no volume, seems like it’s always flat no matter what you do, the strands easily fly off and the style does not look as fresh as before, it is calling for a trim. Often times, the longer your hair grows, the more it gets pulled down by its own weight. Regular trims will ensure it always looks perfect.

Uneven layers:

There are times when some parts of your hair are longer than the rest. Section your hair into four and make ‘matutas’; if the ends of the four braids are not the same, your hair length is uneven. This makes it difficult to style it. It is even worse if the hair has a frizzy look. Trim it!

Stunted growth:

If your hair is stuck at one length, regardless of how much conditioning and protective styling you do, it’s time to trim it. When the hair is damaged, it becomes difficult for it to attain full growth. So, stop cluttering your bathroom with little strands of hair every time you comb it, and trim it.

Calendar: When was the last time you had a trim? For healthy hair, trim it at least every eight weeks.
