It’s that time of year when you want to look your best and probably experiment with shimmer and sparkles. Here are some holiday makeup tips that will keep you looking amazing!
1. Start with a healthy fresh face
If your skin is tired, this will come across even when you apply makeup. The secret to a beautiful face is in the complexion. Try to eat healthy on most days and keep yourself hydrated. Limit your intake of alcohol and get enough sleep. Exfoliate your skin at least once a week to get rid of dry, dead skin. Follow up with a hydrating mask to give your skin a youthful glow. Always moisturize, irrespective of your skin type.
2. Prime your face
Use a primer to prepare your skin for makeup. A primer helps to smooth any fine lines and wrinkles, while absorbing excess oils, thereby leaving your skin matt. Some DIY primers include a light coating of coconut oil or olive oil prior to applying the foundation. If you have oily skin you can prime using milk of magnesia -- this forms a barrier between the skin and the makeup, giving you a flawless matte finish to last the entire evening.
3. Adjust your makeup to your outfit
Avoid matching your makeup to your outfit as it will look tacky. If you have a sparkly dress, keep your makeup matt and simple. If you are in purple, do not attempt to match by applying purple lipstick and purple eye shadow. If your outfit is bold, your makeup should be subtle.
4. Bring out your eyes or your lips
If you have a bright or sparkly lip, your eyes should be simple. If you have a smokey eye, your lips should be neutral. You can’t have both a bold lip and bold eye as your face will look overdone. For instance, if you have bright blue or purple eye shadow you should avoid a dark lip or a bright red lip. Nude tones that are closer to your natural lip color would match light eye shadow
5. Add shimmer
To make your eye shadow stand out and give it staying power, add some water to the powder and then apply.
Apply shimmer to only one or two places on your body. For example, you can apply it to your eyes and cheekbones, or your eyes and décolletage area, or your cheekbones and legs.
6. Don’t overdo your jewelry
Although you may be tempted to go all out, make sure that you wear your jewelry correctly. If you have a bold or chunky neck pieces, everything else should be small and subdued. If you have chunky earrings and a chunky ring, your neck piece should be simple.
