How to comfortably leave the househelp with your baby

Once you get over the painstaking process of hiring a nanny for your baby, the next assignment is to prepare her for the days without you. It might be scary at first but it is unavoidable even if you are a stay-at-home mother. Here are four points to discuss with your nanny before you step out of the house for the first time.

The general house and baby rules

It is easier to be responsible when your responsibilities are defined. Write everything she must do in a contract. Things like hygiene, basic baby care, laundry days, your dos and don'ts, specific things baby likes, feeding and napping times, etc. are included here.

Emergency numbers

Emergency numbers for the fire department, security guards (at your gate), and doctor and ambulance numbers should be written down and displayed prominently. It is also advisable to train her about first aid and emergency situations so that she knows when to seek help.

Family phone numbers

In addition to yours and partner's numbers, include close family member's and friend's numbers. This will come in handy if ever you are unreachable.

Medical conditions

If your child has any medical condition or is on medication you need to give your nannie clear instructions on what to do. Things like hernia and allergies require special attention

To-do list

If there is anything you want your nanny to do over and above her usual duties, let her know.

Trusting someone with your child is not an easy matter but with time and transparency you will be more at ease when you are out of the house. It is also good to note that the more articulate and professional you are about your agreement the more responsible and effective your nanny will be.

P&G is currently providing free household training for nannies at different locations countrywide. Visit www.mumsvillage.com for more information.
