Six decorating pitfalls to avoid

Many people put off interior design projects because they are afraid to get it wrong. So they figure it is easier to live in their current situation, that is devoid of style and oomph, because it is safer. We show you how to avoid the common mistakes that cloud majority of design projects.

1. Buying furniture before measuring

Furniture in a showroom always looks smaller than it actually is. It’s why many buyers are shocked when they get home and their furniture is bigger than their living room. Showrooms have vast space than a typical house setting.

To avoid this dilemma, always bring your floor measurements to the shop. If you love an item but the size is slightly bigger, ask if you can get it customized.

2. Picking paint first

It is harder to match fabric that you like to paint swatches than it is to match paint to fabric. Always pick your primary fabric, drapery, pillows and carpets before settling for a paint swatch.

3. Playing safe

Take a bold step. Paint that loud pattern on an accent wall, go with that outrageous rug or that dramatic accent chair. Pick one aspect of your room that stands out then tone it down with your selection of other fabric, paint and accessories.

4. Being bold with everything

Have you walked into a room that has bold paint, bold fabric choice or print, bold patterns, loud art, dramatic accessories all at once? If you want to avoid your space looking like a circus, desist from having all bold pieces in one space. Sometimes a space needs that gray sofa or that dull pillow to bring some balance.

5. Hanging art above eye level

Do you hang your art almost close to your ceilings? If the art or pictures are hung too high up they look unsightly and you have to strain to look at them. Hang your art at eye level or slightly above not too far up. A good way to keep tabs is to always stay below the top of your door frame.

6. Buying the whole set

Shopping for everything from one store. Buying the whole catalogue as it is set in the store is a terrible idea in the long run.

Your design should tell a story of your life and where you have been which is not something you can buy off one catalogue. Buy your pieces from different outlets and mix costly items with low-priced items for a clever look.
